Summary/Abstract: March 2nd 1958 marked the appearance of the radio journalism in the Mureş area, with its destiny profoundly connected to the local written press of the communist period, due to an entire generation of common editors. By that time, Radio Tîrgu Mureş was the fifth regional studio after those previously created in Cluj and Craiova (1954), Timişoara (1955) and Iaşi (1956). Between 1958 - 1985, the first generation of radio journalists created and developed the local radio journalism, struggling to overcome the political restrictions and the strict censorship of the communist period, in order to provide not only politically predefined pieces of information, but also authentic productions to the listeners. Thus, Radio Tîrgu Mureş achieved a significant performance of becoming an outpost against censorship during the 70s, offering the regional culture the unique experience of the free expression, as explained by Cornel Moraru, chief-editor of Vatra, a representative cultural publication of the period. But the voice of the radio was brought to silence in January 1985, when the communist regime decided to close all the regional radios. During the fall of communism, Radio Tîrgu Mureş was reborn in December 1989, when the old team of editors restarted the bilingual transmission, in Romanian and Hungarian.
