Summary/Abstract: Hesychasm (Greek, from hesychia - quiet, silence) - is an ancient tradition of spiritual practice, underlying Ortodox Ascetism and includes a full complex of ideas about man, about his mind and activity. Hesychasm is also the theology of St. Gregory Palamas, named Palamism, recognized by Greek Church in 1341. The law of life and living, says St. Gregory Palamas, is to "remember God more often than we breathe". The Hesychasm tradition spread in all Ortodox countries: Bulgaria, Serbia, Romanian Principalities, Georgia, but the principal focus, principal layer of the Hesychasm during post-Byzantine period was Russia. The first and best known promoters of Hesychasm in Serbia - by solitary life, characteristic for Serbian Hesychasm - were hermit ascetics St.Gavril Lesnovski, St. Prohor Pcinski and St. Joachim Osogovski from the monastery of Osogovo, Macedonia.
