Summary/Abstract: On October 2, 2016 Hungary held a referendum on the application of a mandatory quota for the reception of refugees that may be imposed by the European Union. This referendum prompted an examination of refugee quotas for the reception of Hungarian refugees from the 1956 Revolution who fled to Austria and sought asylum in other Western countries. UN archives and official publications show that many countries welcomed the Hungarian refugees and announced voluntary quotas for the number of refugees they would accept for resettlement. Austria failed to secure its more ambitious goal of mandatory quotas, but its call for expeditious resettlement was largely accepted.
