Cognitive possibilities of Metcalfe’s lawin defining economic value of communication networks

Summary/Abstract: In this article the author attempts to assess cognitive usefulness of Metcalfe’s law in defining the economic value of network. The paper presents a theoretical reconstruction of Metcalfe’s law pointing to mistakes in its application. It also shows competitive concepts explaining economic value of the network depending on the number of its nodes. There is also reference to the theory of externalities in the context of network, considering the possibility of communication between actors from the potential and effective perspective. In this approach Dunbar’s number is used to explain the range of external effects in the structure of the network.
