Summary/Abstract: The research is a part of a wider study on the contemporary conditions of social welfare. The paper focuses on the impact of the European integration on the convergence between the European Union countries in terms of social welfare, measured with Human Development Index and indicators of social inequality. The analysis was conducted in two stages: 1) a comparison of the old and new member countries with the usage of dispersion measures, 2) an analysis of changes in the Euclidean distance between EU countries. The aim of the article is to examine whether and to what extent the new member states conformed to the “old” EU countries in terms of measures of social welfare.
