Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the specific issue bearing on the relics of St Simeon the founder of the Serbian dynasty of the Nemanjićs, or, to put it more precisely, with their form and the category to which they belonged. First the author takes a broader view of this problem, insufficiently studied in scholarly circles, and examines the ideas and practice of the medieval Christian world. The surviving sources and meagre material testimonies indicate that the general concept of relics (reliquiae, leipsana) designated both the veneration of whole, embalmed bodies (en domati agioi), as well as the skeleton remains of saints (ta odta, ossa). The decisive sign of sainthood was the gift of miracle-making, not the form of relics, which is the topic expounded by the most significant theologians since patristic times.
