Summary/Abstract: This introductory article discusses selected aspects of sound in the Urbanocene. Beginning with the concepts of the Urbanocene and urbanism, the authors draw upon research conducted by Geoffrey West and other urban scholars to point to the strong interdependence between the city and the wellbeing of people and the entire planet. Situating the urban soundscape in the Urbanocene, the article presents audial practices of the city as defined by ecological awareness and demanding a different kind of perception, alternative to visual culture and fostering new experiences and perspectives. Listening to the city also refers to researching the environmental acoustics as a positive study programme (R. Murray Schafer) and concerns everyday practices of attending to both accidental and deliberate production of urban sounds.
