Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study was to present the motivational aspects (“naming principles”) of the names of selected interior spaces (domes, halls and corridors) of thirteen accessible Slovak caves. In the analysis, we were motivated by the classification of A. Yu. Bratuchin (2018), who distinguishes three types of naming principles: direct, metaphorical and memorable. The given principles also found application in the investigated speleonymy. From the frequency point of view, the whole set is dominated by a direct principle, related to naming according to the characteristic features of space and fulfilling an orientational, informational and educational function (e.g. Dlhá chodba “Long Corridor”, Biely dóm “White Dome”, Dóm netopierov “Dome of Bats”). Next in line is the metaphorical principle, which is a reflection of the imagery and immediate impressions of speleologists in the discovery and research of underground objects (e.g. Tigria chodba “Tiger Corridor”, Gotický dóm “Gothic Dome”, Sieň Mliečnej cesty “Milky Way Hall”). The least represented is the memorial principle with a dedicational and informational function (e.g. Majkov dóm “Majkoʼs Dome”, Sieň potápačov “Diversʼ Hall”, Jánošíkov dóm “Jánošíkʼs Dome”). We recorded the same frequency order in (partial) sets of speleonyms of six of the thirteen caves examined. Due to the dominant position of the direct naming principle (to a large extent also at the level of sets of speleonyms from particular caves) we can observe certain tendencies in the selection of naming principles for individual parts of Slovak caves, but without the need to generalize the finding.
