Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the question of liturgical language of the Roman rite. In the history of the “Latin” liturgy, it tries to describe cases when the Roman rite used a language other than Latin. At the same time, the article distinguishes the liturgical language in which the liturgist uttered liturgical texts from the vernacular language, which allowed the participation of believers in sacred events. In this context, the use of the Roman liturgy in missions is described. The article also deals with the movements of rationalism and the Enlightenment, which sought to influence the liturgical life of the Church, as well as the liturgical movement in the 19th and 20th centuries. Finally, the legislative process is described, in which, after the Second Vatican Council, the Latin language was de facto replaced by vernacular language.
