Summary/Abstract: The author analyses Kostadin Moravenov's book "A Monument of Plovdiv's Population" (Plovdiv, 1984), an interesting and detailed source which makes it possible to study historical demography in 19th century Bulgaria. B. Laury has drawn valuable data from Moravenov's book on the ethnic appurtenance of Plovdiv's inhabitants from the end of the 18th century up until 1870. He has carefully traced the process of integration in the town during this period, to which Moravenov himself has paid little attention. The author indicates the two integrating factors — the professional milieu and marriage. He pays special attention to the ethnic structure of Plovdiv in the period under review, while simultaneously outlining the composition and professions of the separate ethnic groups in the town. In studying the marriages of Plovdiv's population the author provides rich information about the situation of women in the town at that time, their rights and opportunities which differed considerably from those in the peasant families. B. Laury has studied a document of remarkable value for the period. Although his researches refer to only one Bulgarian town and do not offer opportunities for a fuller and more systematic study, they are an important step in the study of the ethnic history of the Bulgarian population in the 19th century.
