Summary/Abstract: Balkan historiographies, stressing a Christian view on historical events, tend to underrate the importance of Muslim politicians or militaries by grossly designating them as “the Turks”. A prosopographical approach to the Oriental Crisis (1875-1881) has to include the main Ottoman diplomatists and higher officers, amongst which Lofchali Ibrahim Dervish pasha (circa 1812- 1896). Stemming from a distinguished Pomak family from northern Bulgaria, he linked his military career to that of Omer pasha Latas. He participated actively to both wars against Montenegro in 1853 and 1862. He was vali of Bosnia, when the insurrection broke out in 1875. He commanded the Ottoman Army directed against Montenegro during the second half of 1876, without showing much activity. In October-November 1880 his task was to oblige the insurgents of the League of Prizren to surrender Ulcinj to Montenegro. In April-May 1881 he crushed the League’s rmy.
