Summary/Abstract: The subject of this paper is the novel Grad, pepeo (The City, the Ashes) written by a contemporary Croatian writer, Ivana Rogar. This is a recently published first novel by Rogar, provoking critical and broader readers’ response from the moment of its publishing. The interpretation of this romanesque universe and its dark atmosphere was mainly taking place during current pandemic, and the definition of the nature of its fictionality has been problematic. With occasional dialogue with existing critical responses, this work will interpret and analyze the elements of The City, the Ashes in light of the underlying Beckettian‑existentialist conceptual literary process.
