Summary/Abstract: The photographs awarded in the Grand Press Photo contest in the category of Environment contribute to raising social awareness about modern environmental problems and challenges. A rhetorical analysis of the selected photographs and photo-relations proves that the persuasive force of image when used as an emotional argument may influence the public opinion concerning the state of the environment and encourage the viewers to take pro-environmental action. The article presents the role of “strategic empathy” in the persuasive function of photojournalism.
