Summary/Abstract: The article is an analysis of oral history accounts made by clergymen during their obligatory military service in the late 70s, which was a part of repressive policy of the state towards the Catholic Church. The accounts concentrate on experiences in the army, highlighting attempts at structuring and rationalizing the experience of military service. Moreover three characteristic themes seem to be important in the narrations: moment of departure to the army unit, everyday life in barracks and discharge from the army.
