Summary/Abstract: In this paper I am discussing the rural yard, which has not attracted much attention of anthropologists, and the specific reason for consideration is presence of certain yards where numerous concrete objects were used for decoration. The rural yards, with or without sculptural decorations, are discussed as a part of culture of housing, as products of vernacular architecture and within the main principles of anthropology of space. I view a yard as an arranged space that communicates the way of life in the household, as well as an interaction space of members of a household and the immediate social surroundings. I understand the use of various elements (living and inanimate) for yard decoration as a system of objectified meanings constructed within the available cultural codes and used by the owners of the yard (the family) to express their relationship with the broader community. The yard is also a liminal space and its arrangement sets the interaction between the pronouncedly private space of the home and the public space of the rural community.
