Summary/Abstract: Theoretical formulations in economic anthropology were based upon research of primitive societies and their economic organization, and, later on, on the discourse of comparison between primitive and modern capitalist economy. Economic organization of peasant societies became the object of research with gradual establishment of the so-called culturalist approach in economic anthropology. This paper portrays key theoretical standings of economy of peasant societies, presenting the argument that it is heuristically more fruitful to observe the economy of peasantry in the context of structural subordination of peasantry than in comparative scheme which also includes primitive and modern capitalist societies, or with exclusive focus on economic autarchy as key characteristic of economic organization of peasantry.
