Summary/Abstract: This analysis starts from a “fictional assumption” that if would be possible for Emily Dickinson and Herman Melville, although they never have met each other, to establish in the midst of the Civil War a virtual peace by writing, a peace based upon love, hospitality and gift. This assumption has been based upon a detailed analysis of Melville's “Bartleby. the Scrivener” and Emily Dickinson’s attitude towards writing.
