Summary/Abstract: The process of economic integration initiated among Western European states in the 1950s turned into the European Union after 1990. Two different integration theories and policies have been in competition during the process of European integration which has been going on since the 1950s. In this article, competition between “federal integration” and “confederal integration” theories and policies, which have deeply influenced the European integration process, are examined and explained.
