Summary/Abstract: The Library of Faculty of Islamic Studies, in Sarajevo, although new, founded in 1977, contains some of the earliest books printed in Arabic script. These books were first printed in the printing firms in Istanbul and Cairo in the 18th and the 19th century, before the official printing company – Sopronova pečatnja (later Vilajet printing firm) opened in Bosnia in 1866. In Bosnia most attention is paid to the study of Islamic manuscripts, and the questions of the beginning of the press and first printed books are rarely treated. We shall state in this paper the reasons for late acceptance of the press by Muslims, the first printing houses in Istanbul and Cairo, and describe the oldest copies of books printed in Arabic script which are kept at the library of the Faculty of Islamic Studies in Sarajevo.
