Summary/Abstract: Stanislav Vinaver has written several essays and reviews on film. In these texts Vinaver deals with the possibilities of establishing a distinctive film language, the creative power of film as a new medium, the relation of film to literature, history and ideology, then the definition of humor on the big screen, the effects on the audience and our perception of reality. Already in the early twenties, Vinaver realized the artistic, educational and propaganda power of film. He wrote about the influence of film on the understanding of reality and about the possibilities for the creative potentials of film to influence other arts, primarily literature. Vinaver was particularly interested in the films of Charlie Chaplin and Walt Disney. Vinaver’s film aesthetics began as a glorification of moving pictures and ended with a critical review of the Hollywood dream factory. The paper also pays attention to Vinaver’s participation in writing the dialogue for the film The Miraculous Sword (1950), directed by Vojislav Nanović.
