Summary/Abstract: The present paper explores the ways in which the linguistic background of the trainee interpreters can prove a useful tool in developing strategies of coping with difficult interpretation situations. The two fields the paper explores are semantics and pragmatics. It mainly focuses on strategies of simultaneous interpretation, as being more difficult due to the additional time constraints it poses on interpreters, but the suggestions outlined here can benefit the notetaking exercise in consecutive as well. One important aspect is that these are rather strategies meant to cope with difficulties in discerning the meaning expressed in the source language, as well as in rendering it in the target language. They are a tool to overcome hurdles in grasping and rendering the meaning, and keep the message flowing and the customer happy. They area part of the training process, troubleshooting strategies which the trainee conference interpreter can resort to.
