Summary/Abstract: Morality, especially in the field of bioethics, confronts us with a multitude of difficult situations. Although it is common to refer to these situations as “moral dilemmas”, most are not dilemmas in a technical sense. In this article we distinguish, first of all, situations that we can describe as problematic or tragic from the authentic dilemmas. Next, we analyze the dilemmas in bioethics and their relationship with the application of principles. We claim that, in order to solve these dilemmas, it is not possible to dispense with a substantive moral theory that includes not only a more or less orderly list of duties but also a certain conception of the good.
