Summary about the underwater archaeological heritage in Romania

Summary/Abstract: Romania possesses a 245 km coastline, on the west side of the Black Sea.The underwater scientific research is there only poorly developed. In the late sixties, a group of military divers, supervised by Constantin Scarlat, has discovered a rich archaeological patrimony of underwater ancient objects. Numerous objects, vestiges and antique wrecks were thus discovered and, sometimes, raised to the surface. Since their interventions, no exploration campaign has been undertaken. This leaves great possibilities of development for the field of subaquatic archaeology in Romania. The aim ofour study is to make an inventory of this field of researches in Romania and to examine the Museum of the Navy's collections, in Constanţa, as well as those of the National Museum of History in Bucharest, both constituted of objects found during the interventions of Constantin Scarlat and Vasile Cosma.
