Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the attitude of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and of extreme right-wing nationalist formations towards new phenomena associated with the activities of young people: alternative forms of music, new religious movements (sects), cohabitation without marriage (domestic partnership), and explication of homo- and bisexuality. The aims are to examine the clash between tradition and modernity, religion and secularism, collectivity and individuality; to research the ideology and phraseology based on negative social stereotypes and prejudices; to study the culture of exclusion and lack of tolerance. The article is based on an analysis of various sources (print publications, audio and visual materials), and on fieldwork by means of semi-standardized interviews, focus groups, a survey, and participant observation.
