Summary/Abstract: Social phenomena and processes are difficult to define due to their complexity. The aAuthors propose a comprehensive approach to measure and analyze poverty and social exclusion as well as simple and complex diagnosis of that phenomena. Results of the social coherence pilot survey conducted by Polish CSO (GUS) were a base to construct and calculate multidimensional poverty, social isolation and exclusion. The greatest attention was given to discuss the synthetic index of bad life conditions. To construct the index of the social exclusion an assumption was made that social bonds "secure" in crisis situations, and their lack increases risk of the poverty and exclusion. The social exclusion was defined as a household situation which is affected by at least one of three poverty forms and at the same time is social isolated. A household was recognized as socially isolated if its members do not maintain appropriately frequent relations with the (surrounding them) outer environment.
