Summary/Abstract: The Independent Students Association 1980-1981 acted according to the principles that arose, to a great extend, from the principles of the Church social teachings. It is necessary to point out, that the young Polish intelligentsia gathered around these principles regardless from their religious believes, since the Church was perceived by the academic community as the space for freedom, where there was place for everyone whose ideals were connected with human dignity, freedom, social love (the principle of social solidarity), common good or the principle of mutual help. If it hadn't been for the imposition of the martial law, the activity of NZS might have led to the quicker education of the future political elites. The imposition of the martial law directed the activity of the young Polish intelligentsia somewhere else; they concentrated on the underground activity and slowly headed towards the liberalization of the socio-political life departing from the original principles.
