Summary/Abstract: The article discusses some basic scientific ideas about multilingualism. The learning of a foreign language and the literary language other than the mother tongue is distinguished. Both types of multilingualism function at a competent level in a similar way, which influences modern learning practices. The communicative approach has a beneficial effect on the selection and formulation of the learning tasks. Through them it is achieved such a mastery of the target language, which is useful for students' everyday life. Multiculturalism also requires a change in the policies of organizing school education. Learning a new language is not an elitist occupation, it is part of the obligatory general education of the modern young person. Thanks to foreign languages, he can integrate into the competitive labor market and touch European cultural heritage
