Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to review the solutions chosen in translating proper names of Austro-Hungarian military units and institutions into Polish (in texts originally written in or translated into Polish in the late 20th and the early 21st century). This goal is achieved by outlining a general theoretical onomastic semantic and translatological framework, in which translations of semantically transparent proper names of insti¬tutions may be described. Some characteristics of military vocabulary and names are outlined. Austro-Hungarian and interwar Polish naming patterns of military units are briefly compared. The discussion of solutions in Polish texts and translations follows. The general finding is that there is a considerable diversity of strategies or techniques used in translating the analysed names; some of them are aimed at maintaining the original name structure/pattern, others are aimed at adapting the names to a more typical and natural Polish naming pattern.
