Summary/Abstract: The paper looks into the question of the relationship between the research methodology of Vytautas Kavolis, a Lithuanian-American sociologist, and phenomenology. It is argued that Kavolis’ relationship with phenomenology is multifaceted. On the one hand, in one of his research fields (sociology of visual arts and literature), the scientist strictly distances himself from phenomenology, while in other ones, such as Civilization Studies, he sometimes relies on phenomenological ideas. On the other hand, there are points at which Kavolis’ methodology intersects with phenomenological philosophy and sociology. However, these common points were not explained by the scientist himself. The only publication where Kavolis consciously and heavily relies on phenomenology is his study Nužemintųjų generacija (The Generation of the Humiliated).
