Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the position of the Lithuanian-American sociologist Vytautas Kavolis on social determination of culture. It aims to ascertain whether Kavolis is a strict social determinist. It is argued that he dissociates himself from strict social determinism in four-fold way. Firstly, according to Kavolis, the impact of social reality on culture is not strictly defined. Secondly, the culture creation reflects not only the social structure, but also the individuality of its creator. Thirdly, cultural traditions and social organization of cultural activities influence the creation of culture. Fourthly, there is an inverse impact of culture on social reality. The question is raised whether there is any logical possibility of a strict determinism in Kavolis’ position on social determination of culture. It is also argued that Kavolis is not a proponent of economical determinism. According to him, the economical factors are important determinants of culture, but there are some other significant determinants.
