Summary/Abstract: Kolarzowa explores the construction of Polish collective identity before the foundation of the Second Polish Republic in 1918. Elucidating why non-discursive means were essential in this formational work she relates some of these means – which were based on practices of anti-Semitic violence – to Pierre Bourdieu’s notion that the most significant elements of cultural capital must be embodied while their proper manifestation becomes a reflexaction. Kolarzowa also presents the effects of this strategy and its repercussions today.
