Summary/Abstract: Continuous and quick socio-economic events and changes demand that an individual be able to change and acquire new knowledge and develop various skills. One of the key elements of adaptation to such changes is the process of lifelong learning that represents a sort of an answer to the necessity of continuous education and learning. Lifelong learning is frequently seen as key for personal, social and professional development of an individual as well as a starting point for the development of competencies necessary for life and work in the 21st century. The realization of these competencies usually requires the application of various innovative strategies of teaching and learning, particularly those strategies that lead to the process of active learning. The goal of this paper is to present the importance and role of teaching communication skills in the process of lifelong learning, to introduce strategies for their teaching and learning and to emphasize the need for their continuous acquisition in both formal and informal modalities of learning. Since active learning is a strategy that is most appropriate for teaching as well as acquiring communication skills, the paper presents the constructivist theory within the scope of which a model of interactive, cooperative learning is developed.
