Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this study was an attempt to show the opinions on languages expressed in the prefaces to the Polish-Latin dictionaries, regarding, among others, the valuation, use, specifics, often formulated contrastively. The material basis were the dictionaries of Mikołaj Volckmar (1596, 1605), Grzegorz Knapiusz (1621, 1632), Benedykt Woronowski (1769) and the Dasyposiusz katolicki (1642). In the conclusions main thematic fields are outlined which serve the description of languages, including: a) general praise of a given language, b) its geographical range, c) justification of its usefulness, d) description of the language system, e) lexicographic remarks. It was observed that the questions raised by the authors remain in accordance with the then tendencies and ways of speaking about language, particularly about the Polish language.
