Summary/Abstract: The present study examines the origin and development of hereditary transmission in Roman private law. According to the author, the first known cases of transmission date back to the pre-classical era, but the definite appearance of transmission is associated with the imperial and praetorian practices in the classical era. The final consolidation of the institute at the legislative level is observed in post-classical Roman law.
