Summary/Abstract: Ambient is a contemporary musical genre with a mere 45 years of history but with an already established and quite specific approach to sound. Ambient music rarely fits traditional musical forms and is often deprived of percussion and rhythmic structures. Its tempo is slow and the various sound layers which shape the music can be of either melodic or non-musical origin. In ambient music atmosphere prevails over complexity and while the musical language of the genre might often feel simple and unpretentious, the tools, technologies and post-production practices involved in the creative process are not. This text explores some of the most commonly used instruments in ambient music but also looks at various approaches to recording, producing and live performing. The good understanding of these allows for a better orientation within the nuanced sonic variety of the genre.
