Summary/Abstract: Fieldwork recordings is a practice with both scientific and artistic applications. It takes sound recording out of the traditional studio environment to bring it to the outside world. The purpose is the documentation of acoustic events from environmental and natural origin. Since the second half of the 20th century, the urban and industrial soundscapes have been more and more present in the works of field recordists. The following text discusses the dynamics of field recordings as a means of musical expression. It briefly summarizes their history with some of its past and current technical specifics but is mostly focused on observing its current place in musical practice. Through a close look at a selection of contemporary works, recordists, and their respective approaches the piece attempts to showcase how field recordings are crossing the boundaries between documentary practice, experimental music and composition, live performance, and even music literature.
