Summary/Abstract: The article is a part of the discourse concerning the image of modern university. It was inspired by Bill Readgins who noticed in 1995 that the university is “a ruin that is becoming increasingly difficult to inhabit by a community of scholars and their students connected by a passion for seeking truth. Without giving shelter to thinking, the ruins of the university turn scholars into bureaucrats and students into consumers acquiring competences desired for the labor market.”(Readgins, 2017, p. 7–8). He was wondering how this observation inscribes into modelling and reforming universities in different countries. I also joined the discourse on the future of universities in Poland. The article analyzes which of Readings’ priorities will influence the future shape of universities – science and its development determined by research or the labor market with its needs. Undoubtedly, universities are not indifferent to the labor market that forms the educational dimension of higher education, including university education.
