Summary/Abstract: Presenting symbolic names, a group of Latvian proper names, in Lithuanian has hardly been investigated at all. The paper focuses on the symbolic names reflecting the life of Latvia. The focus is on the Latvian symbolic names of the last five years used in the Lithuanian press. The symbolic names under investigation include names and titles of companies, institutions, organisations, recreational centres, entertainment centres, sports clubs, and teams, newspapers and other publications etc. The names of houses, which have had a tradition in Latvia, occupy a peripheral position. The paper gives an overview of verbal expression of some names and their usage in the Lithuanian press. In some very rare cases they are differentiated according to meaning. The graphic expression of symbolic names varies from inverted commas to capital letters to different fonts. The same rules should be followed when giving them in Lithuanian. The results of the overview have shown that the Lithuanian press faces a number of problems. The most frequent of them is a failure to preserve the diacritic marks, particularly those which discriminate Latvian and Lithuanian–long vowels and palatalised consonants. The word order in a sentence also seems to cause problems. The general impression is that the Lithuanian press is not particularly interested in giving symbolic names in the most precise manner.
