Summary/Abstract: A means (instrument) of performing an action in Lithuanian is usually expressed either by the instrumental case or the instrumental with the preposition su ('with'). Due to its compaction and preference given to the older form, a tendency to prefer the pure instrumental in scientific prose and professional style should be supported; however, the instrumental with the preposition su should not be treated as erroneous, particularly in everyday speech, in the belle lettres and newspaper styles. Some time ago there was a tendency to widely use constructions with the post-position pagalba or su N pagalba. To clarify with the help of schemas. Expressing means with the help of the preposition ant ('on') should be avoided. This construction was transferred from Slavic languages and is still alive in spoken Lithuanian. A shade of the meaning of means has been preserved in some constructions denoting manner or mode. In those cases, the prepositions per and pro (across and through) should not be confused.
