Summary/Abstract: The article presents a political use of history in Spain during the first decade of the twenty first century. It examines decisions made by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, the Prime Minister of Spain and the leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), and their influence on Spanish public opinion. It also describes the purpose of the government’s politics of remembrance and presents in detail the Historical Memory Act. This article argues that the aim of The Act was not to rewrite history and make people responsible for crimes of the past. Moreover, it presents the important role played by the politics of memory in compensating for the persecution and violence suffered during the 1936-1939 Spanish Civil War and the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco.
