On Some Methodological Debates in the History of Medicine

Summary/Abstract: Since the beginning of the 20th century the development of history of medicine goes along with debates about which is its territory, which are its approaches and methods, which are the best approach and the best method, who is best placed to write it. During several decades these questions do not find satisfactory answers. The unsuccessful debates give rise to incertitude in the research potential and relevance of the history of medicine, occupy for too long the attention of researchers, create an atmosphere of crisis and separation. A change in the point of view in several directions is needed in order to overcome the tendency to limit the history of medicine within ready patterns and to accept its natural development as a multidisciplinary research field.
