Summary/Abstract: At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, conducting catechetical activity in Poland was fraught with difficulty. With adverse political situation and the authorities that had partitioned the Polish territory striving to limit the influence of the Catholic Church as a bulwark of national identity, religious teaching in schools was actively hampered. Catechists who found themselves in a vulnerable situation could rely on the support of special religious magazines, such as the “Miesięcznik Katechetyczny i Wychowawczy” (“Catechetical and Educational Monthly”) (1911-1939), which published valuable information. It provided a lively discussion on catechetical issues, reported on the conventions and catechetical courses organised, and reviewed textbooks for religious education. The objective of the article is to depict religious teaching and education as well as the substantive and pedagogical problems related thereto. It is also to discuss the role of religious reading and music in the educational process according to the magazine. Particular emphasis was placed on the activities aimed at developing the personality of the young generation through the process of religious education and catechesis.
