Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses a number of various meanings of the word deep emphasizing itspolysemious nature. Thanks to highlighting central and peripheral meanings it showshow the meanings are connected and therefore create a semantic network. The useof metaphor in decoding the meaning of a word enabled us to find justification for certainuses, thus, metaphor has become a central tool used in the analysis. The meanings havebeen collected from dictionaries of contemporary English, taking both the American andthe British versions of the language into account. The paper has been written in the lightof cognitive linguistics and has used corpus, qualitative and quantitative method.
