Summary/Abstract: This article analyses regionalisms and dialectisms occurring in the family languageof Joachim Lelewel, an outstanding historiographer of the first half of the nineteenthcentury. The material includes 319 letters written from many places of stay by thehistorian to his relatives in various periods of his life. The basic research assumption isthe thesis concerning the social determinants of a person’s individual language, whilethe most important reference group for each individual in the process of socialization andlanguage acquisition is family. The descriptive-recording and statistical methods wereused in the linguistic material development. The purpose of the review is not only topresent lexis classified as regional or dialectal, but also to indicate its role in the scholar’sfamily language and to determine the semantic fields most influenced by geographicallyconditionedvocabulary.
