Etymological Notes (V)

Summary/Abstract: Etymologies for the Estonian words kõhvitsema, pojeng ~ pujeng and simman are presented. The verb kõhvitsema ’scratch’ is a Low German loan originating in the Middle Low German word schaven. The flower name pojeng ~ pujeng ’peony’ comes from Baltic German. The Baltic German source word Pojenge seems to have formed in northern Germany, where Low German was spoken. The word simman ’village hop’ must have appeared in Estonian as the result of a misinterpretation of „Simon i Sälle”, which is the name of a song game of Scandinavian origin.
