Summary/Abstract: Etymologies are presented for the following Estonian words and expressions: 1) kiini ~ kiili (jooksma) ’(of animals:) to stampede, to run with the fly’, or generally ’to run mad’ (?< Low German kilen ’to run fast’ + a folk-etymological reinterpretation motivated by the word kiin ~ kiil ’gadfly’), 2) kutu coll. ’exhausted’ (< Finnish kuitti coll. ’exhausted’), 3) kärpima ’to trim’ (< Middle Low German kerven ’to cut off ’), 4) tuupi (andma) ’to beat sb.’ (< Middle Low German stupe ’whipping post’, also ’corporal punishment’).
