Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the relevance of one of the best known short stories of Romanian prose writer Liviu Rebreanu, „Ițic Ștrul, dezertor” from the perspective of the historical moment after the First World War, when Jews in Romania were collectively granted Romanian citizenship. The deep humanity of the simple Jew, who did not understand why Romanian society rejected him, was on a collision course with anti-Semitic, brutal and ultimately murderous prejudices.
