Eden and Sheol in the South Slavic Translations of the Bible – a Study of Translation Onomastics

Summary/Abstract: The subject of the article is the South Slavic equivalents of two biblical names – Eden and Sheol. The research material was extracted from chronologically and confessionally different translations into South Slavic languages, and then compared with their equivalents in selected translations into West and East Slavic languages. The philological-comparative method used in the study allowed, first of all, to determine several most important directions and tendencies that guided the authors of South Slavic translations, and secondly, to indicate a map of the most important different and common places in terms of the choice of the translation equivalent of names, which already in the original text and in the oldest translations into Greek and Latin functioned as polysemic and ambiguous in terms of onymic status (both as nomina propria and nomina appellativa). Despite obvious differences, the common places are part of the Slavic biblical-translational continuum.
