Summary/Abstract: The article briefly presents the past and present status of the probation service in Poland. It has been pointed out that the current model of this institution, specified in the Act on probation of- ficers, is a certain compromise that is not perfect, but the system created meets its main objec- tives. So far, many attempts have been made to change it. The need to improve the quality and effectiveness of the work of probation officers was given as a reason for launching legislative initiative. The author of the article points out that such a goal cannot be achieved by changing the Act on probation officers, as the effective work is significantly influenced by legal acts relat- ing to the methodology of the probation officer’s work. It has been also noted that the discussed proposals to change the existing system generally did not use knowledge and experience in the field of human resource management. The author also presents a concept of the reform of probation service which links this institution with opinion-forming teams of court special- ists. Moreover, he proposes that the probation service should function within the structures of district courts.
