Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the evolution of probation, understood as all probationary activities in the criminal justice system, although its scope is limited to probationary work with adult offend- ers. The foundations of probationary work in the early period of its development were rooted in the initiatives of citizens from the upper social classes who at the turn of the 19th century wanted to provide protection to criminals, drunkards and other „morally fallen” people in order to bring them back to society as useful citizens. Later, there were numerous changes in the tasks, organization and financing of probation work, which resulted, among other things, in the trans- formation of probation agencies from purely assistance bodies into organs of executive criminal proceedings. The current direction of changes in the model of probation work in the United States and many European countries has been influenced by the trend of managerialism in criminal policy. The article presents various views on managerial penology and manifestations of managerial strategies in probation work, which should be combined with the individualized treatment of offenders and with supporting them in the process of change.
